Bonus Report #5:
Drive Targeted Traffic to your Web Site in GoogleOf all the ways to promote your Web site, Google is currently one of the best because it is used by roughly a third of Internet searchers -- and getting listed there is still FREE. Listed below are some important things to know about Google that will help you to drive targeted Internet traffic to your Web site. Top Ten Things to Know About the Google Search EngineThe following 10 steps describe the most important points you need to address when preparing your site to rank well in Google. 1. Choose the Right Keywords – A common mistake many site owners make when building their site is to target keywords without truly knowing how many people actually search for them. The initial step of choosing what keywords to target is the most critical one for ranking well in Google, or anywhere else for that matter. There are two tools that you can use to help you target the best keywords: a). The Overture Suggestion Tool is a free resource that allows you to see how many people actually typed in a keyword phrase in the Overture Search Engine during the past month. Although these are the stats for Overture, it is one of best free ways to discover what keyword search terms that Web surfers are typing in the most. b). If you’re willing to spend a little money on picking the right keywords, the best research tool out there is called WordTracker. This online tool allows you to see what keyword phrases are most popular across several search engines over the past 60 days. WordTracker also helps you to see which keywords have a lot of competitors fighting for them, and which are the easiest to get high rankings for. A good way to go about researching keywords is to first use the Overture Suggestion Tool to narrow down what keyword phrases are the most popular for your target audience. Then, use WordTracker to verify the best keywords and discover which of them have the least amount of competitors. Since you can use WordTracker on a day-to-day basis, you can take a single day to finish researching your keywords and only pay for just that day! 2. Keywords in your Title Tags – This is very important to get good ranking with Google, so always include your keyword phrase in the title. Don’t repeat the keyword more than once, and try to keep the length of your title tag between 6 to 8 words. For example, with a keyword phrase of “red widgets”, try to write a title tag that looks like: <title>Red Widgets & Accessories from Your Company Name</title> Don’t forget that your title tags will display as the link that searchers see in Google. You want it to actually mean something and get people interested enough to click on the link, so don’t just create titles jammed with keywords. Write titles that contain the keyword phrase and yet still communicate with your target audience. 3. Keywords in Heading Tags – Towards the top of each page, include your keyword phrase in H1 or H2 tags. As with titles, keep the heading tag short, do not repeat the keyword phrase in it more than once, and still try to convey meaning to your visitors. 4. Keywords in Body Text – Body text is the visible content that visitors read on your page that isn’t contained within a heading text, hyperlink text, etc. As you write the content of each page, you should spread the use of your keyword phrase throughout the page, concentrating most of the keywords in the first and second paragraph. Try to use the keyword in your body text at least once somewhere in the middle and once somewhere towards the bottom of the page. 5. Keywords in Hyperlinks – Always have your keywords shown in hyperlinks and the text just after the hyperlinks. For example, try to include a sentence such as: “Our company is a top manufacturer of red widgets. We have been producing red widgets for over 10 years... “ The link would go to an internal page of your site, such as the product description page for “red widgets”. 6. Emphasized Keywords – Keywords located in bold text or italics are given a slight preference in the Google Search Engine over other words on the page. As a rule of thumb, try to list each of your keywords at least once in bold and once in italics on each page. 7. Don’t Overuse Keywords – Many people are often mislead with the notion, “If I just use the keyword more and more on my site, I’ll rank higher and higher.” Unfortunately, overuse of keywords on a page, or “keyword stuffing”, will eventually hit a spam filter that Google uses in ranking sites. Repeating the same keywords too many times on a page, or several times in a row, will result in Google penalizing such web sites, causing them to rank much lower. 8. Link Popularity – The most important “off-the-page” factor you should know about Google is Link Popularity. According to Google’s system, sites are given greater importance on the basis of link popularity. In general, this means the number of links that point to your site, the quality of the links that point to your site, and the text around the links that point to your site. Once your site is complete, seek out other Web site owners whose sites make use of the same keywords that yours does. The most important thing about Link Popularity and Google is that you want them to link to you with text that uses your most important keyword phrase. For example, you’d want the text link on their page to say, “Red Widgets from Your Company Name” rather than just “Your Company Name”. And just like with links on your own page, try to get them to give a brief description after the link that uses the keyword phrase at least once. In summary, get as many links to your site as possible, from other sites that are listed in Google, from sites that contain the keyword phrases you target, and try to get the keyword phrase included in the link text. This will reap major rewards for you in Google. 9. Fill your Web Site with Content – One primary fact about Google is that it loves content. By content I mean lots of original text, and the more pages the better. Try to fill each page of your web site with 300 to 500 words. Google will give more weight in page ranking to a site that is several sizeable pages than to a domain with only 3 or 4 pages and little textual content. A good practice with your site is to write one new page of meaningful content each day and add it to your Web site (if you have the time for this). This makes your site more valuable to its visitors in addition to giving it more weight in ranking with Google. 10. Now You’re Ready to Get Listed in Google – The Google Search Engine has a free submission service that claims your site may be included in their index within 4 to 6 weeks, with no guarantees. Don’t submit to it! That may sound strange, but Google will never include a new web site unless it has other site within its current index that links to the new site. If you want to get listed in Google, do two things: a). Submit your site to the Open Directory Project. The OPD serves as the Google directory, and any site listed there will automatically be added to Google. b). Get one or more sites that are listed in the Google index to link to your web site. Google’s spider will find your page from these links and add them to its index. If you sufficiently address each of these ten points, then you should find yourself on the right path towards driving targeted traffic to your web site from the Google Search Engine. |
